{"id":141,"date":"2014-03-06T11:50:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T11:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.indwe.co.za\/indwe-blog\/2014\/03\/06\/how-to-ensure-that-your-boundary-wall-is-sturdy\/"},"modified":"2017-03-13T09:32:19","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T09:32:19","slug":"how-to-ensure-that-your-boundary-wall-is-sturdy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indwe.co.za\/indwe-blog\/how-to-ensure-that-your-boundary-wall-is-sturdy\/","title":{"rendered":"How to ensure that your boundary wall is sturdy and safe."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/68.media.tumblr.com\/0141c112e72be7b8e5f10ff78248f4d3\/tumblr_inline_n20ri3mBq81r965u9.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Recently there have been several reports of boundary walls of complexes and private residences that collapsed with the heavy rainfall experienced across the country.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Here&rsquo;s quick check that you can do to ensure your wall is sturdy and safe:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there sufficient drainage? \u00a0<\/strong>Drainage of some sort should be installed on the inside base of the wall.\u00a0If you use drainage pipe, the water that has saturated the soil will eventually find its way to the pipe and be directed away from the wall. The important point here is to have an exit for that water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the surface of the brickwork crumbling away? \u00a0<\/strong><span>If restricted to a few bricks this may not be serious but walls can be weakened by general crumbling across either face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a tree near the wall? <\/strong><span>As trees mature, there is a risk of the wall being damaged by the roots. Damaged sections may have to be re-built, perhaps with bridges incorporated to carry the wall over the roots. Removal of large trees can also lead to problems because the soil accumulates more moisture and expands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><strong>Is the wall upright? <\/strong><span>\u00a0If your wall leans to an extent that could present a danger e.g. more than 30mm (half brick wall), 70mm (single brick wall) or 100mm (brick and a half wall) it is recommended that expect advice is sought. This may involve checking of the wall foundations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there any cracks in the wall?<\/strong>\u00a0<span>Hairline cracks (0-2mm across) are common in walls and may not indicate serious problems. For wider cracks seek expert advice; some may indicate a need for partial or complete rebuilding. Repointing of cracks can lead to problems. Do not repoint without establishing the cause of the cracking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Make sure that you are properly insured especially during the rainy season.
