A smash and grab criminal usually smashes\u00a0<\/span>through a vehicle window, grabbing something of value, while the car is waiting at traffic\u00a0<\/span>lights or stuck in slow moving traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The violent smashing of the passenger window shocks the driver into a few moments of\u00a0<\/span>silent paralysis \u2013 enough to allow the criminal to grab the valuables and flee the scene. The\u00a0<\/span>after-effects\u00a0of a smash and grab include the cost of repairs to the vehicle and windows,\u00a0<\/span>replacing your belongings and feeling traumatised for quite some time after the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

What do Thieves Want?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The thieves are after any valuables they can see inside the vehicle. Items targeted include:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Purses, hand bags and wallets<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Laptop bags, briefcases and backpacks<\/p>\n

\u2022 Shopping bags<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Cell phones, MP3 players and tablets<\/p>\n

\u2022 Loose change and CDs<\/p>\n

\u2022 Keys<\/p>\n

Reduce the Risk<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

While the media gives warnings of some Hot spots, any cautious driver should be able to\u00a0<\/span>identify areas where he\/ she will be most at risk. These tend to be places where criminals\u00a0<\/span>know that vehicles will be stationary, where drivers can be easily distracted and where the\u00a0<\/span>criminal can make a quick and effective escape.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who is Vulnerable?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Single drivers with belongings on the passenger seat<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Female drivers because they are less likely to chase after the criminals<\/p>\n

\u2022 Drivers who are busy on a cellular phone or with a cigarette in the and<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vehicles left unattended away from crowds and with valuables visible\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be On the Lookout<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Avoid areas where traffic is often congested, forcing vehicles to remain stationary for\u00a0<\/span>a while<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Criminals often work in pairs, one will pose as a vendor, distracting your attention\u00a0while the other will perform the smash and grab<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Cellular phones are used by criminals to identify potential victims from a bridge or\u00a0position of elevation and to relay this message to their partners in crime further\u00a0<\/span>along the road<\/span><\/p>\n

Drive Safely<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Lock all your doors and close the windows when driving \u2013 never open windows or door for strangers<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Avoid opening your windows or getting involved in discussions with street vendors\u00a0or anyone handing out flyers<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious looking characters<\/p>\n

\u2022 Always be conscious of your surroundings and remain alert when coming to an\u00a0intersection or stopping your vehicle<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Be wary of people standing at intersections \u2013 they may be innocent, but\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2022 If you encounter obstacles such as rocks or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle to\u00a0remove them \u2013 immediately reverse and drive off in the opposite direction<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 If it\u2019s late at night, slow down well in advance so that the light changes to green by\u00a0the time you reach the intersection<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Leave a gap between you and the car in front of you to give you room to drive away\u00a0if anything happens<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Be wary whenever you see broken glass lying on the road \u2013 if pieces are still\u00a0scattered across the road, chances are that a smash and grab took place\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Remove the Attraction<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 No bags, cellular phones, briefcases should be visible inside the vehicle<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Hide \u00a0valuables \u2013 car floors, dashboards and seats should be free of items<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 If you can’t take valuable items with you, hide them out of sight in your boot<\/p>\n

Parking Precautions<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Thieves target car parks. Always park your car in attended parking lots<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 When parking at night ensure that you always park in a well-lit area<\/p>\n

\u2022 Thieves do not want witnesses \u2013 park your car in crowded areas near pedestrian and\u00a0vehicle traffic<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Never sit in your vehicle without being conscious of your surroundings<\/p>\n

\u2022 Lock your doors and roll up your windows when you park<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Activate your security system<\/p>\n

\u2022 Avoid using the console or glove box as mobile lockboxes<\/p>\n

\u2022 Keep in mind that if you have a great hiding place for a spare key (in your wheel well\u00a0<\/span>or above your sun visor), a thief has thought of it, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Stow belongings like shopping bags and laptops in the boot before you get to the\u00a0<\/span>parking area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Invest in Window Safety Film<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Protective safety film is pasted on vehicle windows to help prevent smash and grab\u00a0<\/span>incidents. The protective film is usually tinted so that no one can see into the car, while also\u00a0<\/span>preventing the windows from shattering. Some insurers provide a discounted premium to\u00a0<\/span>vehicle owners who install window safety film on their vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t have smash and grab film, leave your window open slightly (approximately 3\u00a0<\/span>cm, but less than 5cm) whilst driving. This makes the glass more flexible and more resistant\u00a0<\/span>against shattering if struck by a sharp object.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, if there is nothing to grab there is no reason for the window to be smashed!\u00a0<\/span>Trust your instincts. If you see suspicious activity, find somewhere else to park. Report\u00a0<\/span>suspicious activity to the proper authorities – you could help prevent others from becoming\u00a0<\/span>a victim of a smash-and-grab.<\/span><\/p>\n
