Staying at home this holiday does not have to be a drag. An increasingly popular and fun vacation is the stay-at-home-vacation, or the \u201cstaycation.\u201d Here are a few ideas on how you can have just as much fun when staying at home.<\/p>\n
1. Make your way to the beach or pool. <\/strong><\/p>\n Make your way down to the beach if you are close by. No beach? Go to the pool. Most homes and residential complexes have private swimming pools, as do most high schools and gyms.<\/p>\n 2. Go for a ride. <\/strong><\/p>\n There are many dedicated bike trails not to mention shared use trails. Invite your friends to hit the open road with you.<\/p>\n 3. Movie night. <\/strong><\/p>\n You can rent a movie or borrow one from a friend and have an evening movie night at home. But you can also go to a movie theater and have a 3D experience. Don\u2019t forget the popcorn.<\/p>\n 4. See a show. <\/strong><\/p>\n If you are fortunate enough to live in or near a city that has a theatre, take the family to see the latest theater production.<\/p>\n 5. Go shopping. <\/strong><\/p>\n Make the trek to your nearest mall and spend the day to see what\u2019s new. You do not have to shop, you can simply go for a nice dinner, visit the book store or just do a bit of window shopping.<\/p>\n 6. Take a nap. <\/strong><\/p>\n Hey, vacations are there to escape from daily life and relax. Take that much awaited afternoon nap on the couch, a blanket in your garden or on a hammock.<\/p>\n 7. Take a (little) cruise. <\/strong><\/p>\n Most lakes have some sort of dinner or sightseeing cruise that runs in the summer. Hop on.<\/p>\n 8. Work on that tennis game. <\/strong><\/p>\n Most resorts emphasize tennis. Why not at home? Most high schools allow access to the tennis courts if you don\u2019t have access to a club.<\/p>\n 9. Take a hike. <\/strong><\/p>\n Walking is the best exercise. Find a park, botanical garden or scenic area and plan a hike. Pack a picnic lunch and water and go explore.<\/p>\n 10. Read a book.<\/strong><\/p>\n You don\u2019t have to be sitting in a faraway place to settle in with a good summer read. Go to a local coffee shop and splurge on a cappuccino and spend a few hours lost in a book.<\/p>\n 11. Take an exercise class<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Try yoga, Pilates, spinning, water aerobics or any other classes that you have not tried before at your gym.<\/p>\n 12. Host a dinner party or braai. <\/strong><\/p>\n Invite friends, family or neighbors who are not away on holiday to join you for a relaxed evening at home. Aks them to bring something and share.<\/p>\n 13. Play golf.<\/strong><\/p>\n Even if you\u2019re not an avid golfer, this is the perfect time to try it. Borrow a golf set and head out to the driving range. Some golf courses even have golf sets that you can hire for the day if you do not have one.<\/p>\n 14. Spend time with the kids. <\/strong><\/p>\n People remember the good times spent with each other more than the places they\u2019ve been. Play a deck of cards, a board game that everyone enjoys or cook a meal together. Spend time talking, laughing, and reminiscing.<\/p>\n 15. Get creative. <\/strong><\/p>\n You can do some scrapbooking, paint or draw, re-decorate your home or landscape your garden. <\/p>\n Don\u2019t forget to make sure that you are covered this holiday season.
