South Africans need to be proactive against rising kidnapping threat

South Africa is grappling with a severe kidnapping crisis, with the country now ranked sixth globally for this heinous crime. This alarming surge has seen wealthy individuals and their families become prime targets for increasingly organised criminal syndicates.

The stark reality of the situation is underscored by the staggering statistics. Between 2013 and 2023, SAPS recorded over 15 000 kidnapping cases. The year 2022/2023 witnessed a shocking 42% increase in these incidents compared to the previous year. Even more alarmingly, the third quarter of 2023 alone saw a staggering 4 577 cases of kidnapping for ransom, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action.

• Keep up-to-date with the latest kidnapping trends, safety advisories, and crime statistics in your area. Follow reputable news sources and government alerts.

Business Security

• Conduct regular security awareness training for all employees, emphasising the importance of vigilance, reporting suspicious activity, and following established protocols.
• Create a comprehensive kidnap and extortion response plan that outlines procedures for handling such incidents, including communication protocols, negotiation strategies, and collaboration with law enforcement.
• Enhance physical security for your business premises, including access control systems, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems. Regular security audits can help identify vulnerabilities.
• Provide employees with safe and reliable transportation options. Encourage carpooling or the use of company vehicles when possible.
