Do I need business insurance?

There are many start-ups and people who are self-employed, who don’t know if they need insurance for their ventures. From the tradesman working from a van, to the caterer operating from home, Indwe takes a look at four types of workers who should have business insurance.

FREELANCERS
Whatever freelance work you do, you won’t have the protection of a larger company, with a variety of insurance policies. No matter what industry your work in, there are always risks involved in the work that you do, for example, getting sued for the advice you have given your client or loss due to equipment that was stolen. So you need to get the right insurance cover so you’re sufficiently protected.

TAXI DRIVERS
The minibus taxi industry is a fundamental part of South Africa’s public transport system, however, the taxi business is also considered a high-risk industry. Few taxi drivers are self-employed, instead choosing to work for a specific taxi company. It’s imperative for taxi operators to get insurance cover to protect their drivers, the people who are in their taxis and other road users.

HOME-BASED BUSINESSES
Many businesses are run from home, but what entrepreneurs may not realise is that homeowners insurance usually excludes cover for business-related activities and assets. If you have specialised equipment, you’ll need an appropriate insurance policy, and if you have clients coming to your home, you must make sure you’re protected, so you aren’t held personally liable if something goes wrong.

MOONLIGHTING
When a person has another job, or conducts their own business for personal gain, over and above their normal job, it’s considered moonlighting. You may consider this work to just be a hobby, or a way to supplement your full-time salary, but you are personally liable for this work that you do. A person who moonlights is typically not covered by their full-time employer for their part-time work when it occurs outside of their place of employment.
