The world cup is almost here! This world-class event happens every four years, this is the 20th World Cup. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 stadiums in Brazil from the 12th of June.
Here are a few interesting facts about the World Cup:
- Brazil won the World Cup five times against the following teams: Germany (2002), Italy (1994), Italy (1970), Czechoslovakia (1962) and Sweden (1958).
- In 1959 Brazil also hosted the World Cup, however Germany and Japan were prohibited from participating in the qualifying process.
- South Africa qualified three times for the World Cup in 1998, 2002, 2010
- 2.3 is the average number of goals scored per game
- 12 is most goals scored in a World Cup match.In 1954, Austria beat Switzerland 7-5. The highest scoring final happened when Brazil beat then-host country Sweden by a score of 5-2.
- This years’ mascot is called Fuleco. This three-banded armadillo is unique to Brazil.
- 1954 was the first year shirt numbers were used on the player’s jerseys.
- Roger Milla of Cameroon is the oldest player to score a goal in a World Cup match. He was 42 years and 39 days old when he scored a goal against Russia in 1994.
- Brazilian footballer, Pele is the youngest player to score a goal – he did so at the age of 17 when he scored against Sweden in 1958.
