Autumn is around the corner and what better time to spend some time in the sun than the long weekend? Whether at home or at the beach, try these games and activities to make a summer day special.

1. Beach Obstacle Course

All you need is a shovel and a stick to create a fun beach activity for your child. With the stick, draw a winding line in the sand to create a path for your child to follow. Use the shovel to create ditches or gullies along the path for your child to jump over. You can also build up mounds for them to climb over or walk around.

2. Water Fight

A water fight is a safe and fun group activity for kids – and it’s refreshing on a hot day! Using water balloons, water pistols, a garden hose, or a pool of water and some plastic containers, have a water fight with your child. Invite some of your child’s friends over for the fun and serve popsicles or ice-cream cones afterward.

3. Bubble Contest

Nothing to do on a summer afternoon? Organize a bubble blowing contest! Mix up some bubble solution, assemble some tools for blowing, and you’re set. Give each contestant a supply of bubble solution and some bubble-blowing tools. The competition can include: blowing the biggest bubble, creating the biggest pile of bubbles in thirty seconds, the longest bubble, the prettiest bubble. Give a small toy to the winner of each competition.

4. First Water Slide

Here’s an inexpensive and low-tech way to bring the thrills of a water slide to your own backyard. Use plastic tarp, old shower curtain, or heavy-duty plastic garbage bag. On a level lawn area, spread out the plastic and wet it with an inch or 2 of warm water, or let the water warm in the sun before you begin your play.

5. Play Sardines

This game is a variation of “hide and seek.” It is best played outdoors. “Sardines” can be played with two or more players. One player is “it” and he or she goes off to hide while the other players count to 100 by 2’s or 5’s. When the other players have finished counting, they call out, “coming ready or not!” Everyone goes off to find “it,” seeking separately. As each player finds “it,” he or she hides in the same space, until finally, all the players are squeezed into the hiding place. The first player to find “it” becomes “it” for the next game.
