South Africa’s 2G and 3G mobile networks are being phased out to make way for newer, faster technology like 4G and 5G. While the full shutdown is planned for December 2027, some mobile providers began the decommissioning process as early as January 2025, and certain devices have already lost connectivity.
This matters, because many insurance-linked devices, from vehicle trackers to home security alarms, rely on these networks to function. If yours stops working, your cover could be affected.
Why This Matters for Your Insurance
Your policy may require specific devices to be operational for theft, loss, or damage claims to be valid. If a tracker, alarm, or monitoring system fails due to the network switch-off:
- A stolen car may not be recovered
- A break-in may go undetected
- An industrial alarm may fail to alert the control room
Keeping your devices up to date protects both your assets and your cover, and could be a lifestyle-preserving move.

Motor Vehicle Devices at Risk
Tracking devices, telematics, and fleet management systems that run solely on 2G or 3G may stop functioning. Because brand names don’t always indicate the underlying technology, you would be well-advised to check the model and its specifications.
If you are in the market for an upgrade, consider Radio Frequency (RF) tracking devices. Unlike GPS/GSM-based systems, RF devices do not rely on mobile networks and often have higher recovery rates.

Property & Other Devices at Risk
The shutdown could also affect:
- Home and business security systems linked to control rooms
- Fire alarms, gas detectors, and industrial monitoring systems
- Any device that sends signals via a mobile network
What You Should Do Now
- Contact your service provider to confirm which network your device uses.
- Upgrade if needed – especially if your device runs on 2G or 3G only.
- Test your devices regularly to ensure they are still fully operational.
- Consider alternatives like RF tracking for vehicles to avoid having to rely on your network.
