Now that spring has sprung, take some time to give your home a check-up along with its annual spring-clean. Adding this home maintenance checklist to your routine will help you prepare your home for the warmer months ahead and keep it in top shape.

Inside the house:

• Check that your electrical box is in working order and that you’re protected from power surges.
• Inspect your ceilings for warping and cracking.
• Replace all extension cords that have become brittle, worn or damaged. 
• Clean your tumble drier’s exhaust duct and damper, as well as the surface underneath the dryer. 
• Have your home sprayed for termites and ants. 
• Check your geyser. 
• Have all your carpets and rugs deep-cleaned. 
• Make sure your sliding doors, garage doors and windows are opening smoothly. 
• Check the water hoses on the washing machine, fridge and dishwasher. 
• Reseal the caulking around tiles, sinks, baths, showers, toilets and counters. Inspect exposed plumbing areas for dampness and mould. 
• Fix leaky taps inside and outside the house. 
• Lubricate door hinges and locks. 

Outside the house:

• Kill and remove weeds springing up on your paving and driveway. 
• Winter weather can damage outdoor wooden window frames and decks; so repair and paint them during the spring. 
• Cut back any foliage that is touching the exterior walls of your home. While you’re at it, touch up the paint on these walls. 
• September is the right time to get up on your roof and check for damage. Clean the gutters and inspect the downspouts. Make sure that the fascia is in good condition. 
• Examine the foundation and foundation walls for cracks, leaks or signs of moisture and repair as required, before any problem worsens. 
• Inspect all windows and seals for damage. Too many homeowners believe spring maintenance is all about the cleaning. 

While spring cleaning is important, maintenance aimed at various structures, appliances and systems within the home is just as important.
