In the months of March and April, South Africans enjoy four public holidays. If you’re able to take advantage of these days, you can whisk your family – or yourself – away for a holiday or at least a long weekend break. Whether you’re travelling locally or abroad, here are five points to help you protect your valuable items.
- Limit what you take
You’re on holiday, there’s no need to wear your new birthday watch or an expensive piece of jewellery. Leave sentimental or pricey items at home, so you can relax and not worry about coming a target of theft.
- Carry valuable items
If you are flying to your holiday destination, keep you camera, phone, wallet and other valuable items with you. When you get to you accommodation, make use of a room safe (if one is available) so you can store anything of value that you don’t wish to carry with you.
- Be aware at ATMS
When you have to draw money from an ATM, take a moment to check that there are no suspicious people watching you or standing too close. Where possible, draw money from an ATM that is inside a bank.
- Only keep small amounts of cash on you
While you need to have money on holiday, only carry what you will think you’ll spend per day. Try to avoid keeping all your money in one place, such as your wallet or purse, in case it gets stolen. Be conscious of who is around you when you take money out of your purse, bag, wallet or pocket.
- Don’t be flashy
Showing signs of your wealth will make you a more likely target of crime. You never know who might be watching you, so stay alert and aware when you are out in public, especially if you are in a crowded place.
Holidays are meant for relaxation and fun, not going to the police station to report a crime. Be vigilant whether you’re in your home country or a foreign one, and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, your family and your valuables.
